Community Groups

... where someone wants to invest in you.

My name is Jeff Block, and I lead the Community Life ministry at The Vine. The Small Group ministry, therefore, falls under my care. Some of the finest people in our church have made the commitment to creating Intentional, Authentic Christian Community in the form of Community Groups, and I wanted to take a moment to tell you about them and the groups they lead.

Ed and Becca Bachner -- Ascension

The Ascension community group is led by Ed and Becca Bachner. Ed and Becca were the first two people baptized at The Vine. They are young (early 30's), energetic, always smiling, and just generally fun to be around. You've probably seen them hanging around the coffee bar before church, since Becca leads that ministry. Their community group's vision is to be a fun, thriving, Biblical community for twenty-something's and those young at heart. Child care is not provided, since that's just not the target audience for this young, upbeat, no-kids crowd. A number of folks in the group are single, and they're generally in their 20's and early 30's. Their goal as a group is to worship God and grow together through Bible study, fellowship and prayer. If this is you, don't miss out on Tom's group.

Steve and Sharon Wilhelm -- F.O.C.U.S.

Steve and Sharon Wilhelm lead the FOCUS community group. Steve and Sharon are the most genuine and friendly people you'll find. They are always open to new people, and go out of their way to smile big, give hugs, and generally make people feel welcome. Their community group is an extended family, formed through fellowship, accountability and intentional love. They provide childcare at every meeting, explicitly so that families can come and enjoy community together. Typically, the kids play together, and so do the parents -- as well as eat and study the Bible together. As a group, their goals are to be a family, to mature as Christians, to live Gods word, and to find Gods purpose for our lives. Everyone's welcome; come check it out!

Jim and Deanna Hannis -- L.I.F.E.

Jim leads the Data Management team, as well as the LIFE community group, with his wife Deanna. Deanna is the Stage Manager, as well. And they're both on the Welcome Team. Of course, these all make sense, because both Jim and Deanna are super friendly and super organized. Jim loves his number-crunching, and Deanna loves helping to make the Sunday morning service come together. As well, they both love God, love their community group, and love making a difference in the lives around them. They view it as a committed community, in which members support each other emotionally, spiritually and physically. As a group they have all made it their goals to make the community a priority, to pray for each other regularly, to support each other, and to hold each other accountable.

Carlos and Michelle Garcia -- Unity

The Unity community group, like so many great community activities, meets in the home of Carlos and Michelle Garcia. Carlos and Michelle have four children, a warm friendly cozy house, and a gift for making people feel welcome. Michelle is an amazing cook, and always seems to have some delicious dessert or snack on hand for social time. Carlos is an elder at the church, and has a heart like gold. Both love to just sit and talk about what's happening in others' lives. Their vision for their community group is that it would strengthen families through Bible study, prayer, and fellowship. Their group's shared goals are to be meaningful parts of each others lives, to make God a significant part of our daily lives, and to invite those far from God into their group. Take it from me, there's no better place to explore what you believe in a non-threatening way than at the Garcia's. And bring the kids; childcare is provided, and a number of children already enjoy being a part of their community.

Frances Gehrke -- Women's Evening Bible Study

Frances Gehrke leads one of the two women's in-depth Bible studies. Hers meets in the evenings, so if you're looking to really dig into the Bible and that time slot is most convenient for you, then she'd love to have you. This study is also more adult-oriented than the other, as childcare is not provided and most of the women who attend do not have children. I would describe Frances as "a kind soul". SHe's always smiling, always ready to give you a hug, and faithfully mans the information center at church with Tammy Wiley almost every Sunday. It will warm your heart to be a part of this group.

Tammy Martinez -- Women's Morning Bible Study

The other women's in-depth Bible study is conducted in the mornings, for women for whom this best fits their schedule. The group is led by Tammy Martinez. Tammy, along with her husband Ruben who is an Elder at the church, is a prayer warrior -- no question about it. Tammy's group is a nurturing environment for wives, moms, and women who seek to know God by studying the life of Jesus Christ and desiring to be rooted in God's Word. Their goal is to apply the truths found in God's Word to their everyday lives. If you want to grow in prayer and in your heart for the Scripture, this is definitely a great group for you. Absolutely bring the kids; childcare is provided.

Rob and Kim Marshall -- Wonder Lake

Rob and Kim Marshall lead the Wonder Lake community group. I guess the best way to describe these two is that they have big hearts. Always a smile, a hug, a handshake -- something to let you know that they care. Their group is filled with energetic people who love God, love community, and love to eat when they get together. The group sees their community as a place where they are Intentionally growing together in Christ through study, fellowship and sharing life experiences. Most of the group has young children, so childcare is always provided, and the kids have a great time together. Their shared goals are to be accountable to each other, to create and invest in meaningful relationships, and to develop the habit of regular Bible study. Don't miss it!
